No citywide licence requirement found
Issuing departmentChicago Department of Housing (DOH) — administers the RLTO; there is no separate licensing for long-term rentals

Who must register

No one: as of 2026-08-14 Chicago has no citywide license or registration for long-term residential rentals. Mandatory annual registration of all non-owner-occupied units is contained in the proposed Protecting Renters Ordinance (PRO), introduced in City Council on June 29, 2026 and NOT adopted. A separate license exists only for short-term rentals (Shared Housing / Vacation Rental, chicago.gov/sharedhousing) — which is outside the scope of this long-term rental inquiry.

What tenants must receive

Verbatim from the official DOH page: "The ordinance requires that a summary copy of the ordinance be given to prospective tenants by the landlord. The summary must be attached to each written lease agreement and lease renewal, and must be given to the tenant when there is an oral rental agreement."
